Homecoming runs through Saturday, with current, future and past Hornets gathering at Emporia State for multiple events. The culmination of the week is Saturday’s football game, where the Homecoming King and Queen will be announced.
The candidates are Kyler Akagi, senior social sciences education major; Ana Ballon, senior sociology major; Sawyer Barragan, senior spanish major; Kara Kolar, senior nursing major; Matt Mahr, senior theater major; Shelby Martin, senior physical health education major. Selena Martinez, senior nursing major; Megan McReynolds, senior political science major; Paul Reichenberger, senior business education major; and Michael Webb, senior business administration major.
“I believe the purpose of Homecoming is a time to bring students, alumni, faculty, and family together to enjoy another great time at Emporia State University,” said Natalie Pickerell, president of SPURS and junior health promotions major.
“When it comes to Homecoming royalty, we as a group (SPURS) have organized the event since 2010 after the group Cardinal Key was in charged.”
Homecoming is a way for students and alumni to get involved, McReynolds said. “There are many alumni who come during this time, which is a great way to showcase the university,” said McReynolds. “Students can get involved by coming to the Homecoming events and game, as well as voting for the candidates for king and queen.”
Homecoming Court is a very old tradition and used to be called Peggy Pedagog, according to Lendi Bland, elementary education, early childhood and special education instructor. When Bland was an undergraduate from 79-83, they did not crown a queen or king.
Through the years, the homecoming traditions have changed.
“Homecoming to me, is a really awesome celebration of Emporia State pride,” Akagi said.
“It’s not about any individuals or single groups, while dozens of groups and thousands of people contribute to the fanfare and excitement, it’s all about Emporia State University as a whole, it’s all for our awesome school. We’re all Hornets, celebrating ESU pride together, current students, faculty and employees, and alumni who graduated decades ago.”
