Jacob Miller, junior communications major, is elected as president pro tempore during the Associated Student Government meeting last Thursday in Senate Chambers. ASG also passed 13 bills that recognized registered student organizations.
Associated Student Government approved 13 bills to recognize student organizations during their senate meeting last Thursday. Of those 13 bills, three of the student organizations are new this year.
The new organizations include Anthropology Club, American Sign Language Club and United Methodist Ministry.
Two resolutions, originated by Sawyer Barragan, senior modern languages major, passed unanimously. The first, SR19001 A Resolution in Commiseration of Victims, is regarding the Jacksonville, Florida shooting where 13 people were injured or killed.
The resolution is a stance to renounce violence of any kind, remember the victims and to state that ASG thinks legislation against gun violence should be enacted, according to the resolution.
“The Associated Student Government of Emporia State University feels that legislation must be enacted now to be proactive in additional instances of gun violence,” the resolution said.
A second resolution, SR 19002 Resolution in Remembrance of Senator John McCain, is to “commemorate the memory” of the senator.
ASG also held nominations, and then the election, for president pro tempore.
The president pro tempore’s duties include presiding over the senate when the vice president is incapacitated, as well as serving as the successor if the president or vice president cannot complete their terms, according to Michael Webb, ASG president and senior business administration major.
Jacob Miller, junior communications major, was the only senator to be nominated. He was elected with a vote of 19 in favor and none opposed or abstentions.
“I’m honored to be nominated,” Miller said. “I think I could be an official in this position because of my prior experience as vice president of senate…I know quite a bit about how to run and facilitate a meeting and I appreciate being nominated.”
The next ASG senate meeting will be 5:15 p.m. Sept. 27 in the senate chambers.
