The Hornet Women fell 55-62 to Missouri Southern Jan. 20, in Joplin, Missouri.
The Hornets scored the first five points of the game, taking an early lead.
With eight minutes left in the half, ESU led 18-12. The Lions answered with a 6-0 run, tying the game at 18-18.
At the conclusion of the half, the Lions took the lead, bringing the score to 24-28.
A purely defensive game was played in the third quarter as neither team scored until the 5:39 mark. There were many free throws shot and sunk on both sides of the court as the Lions shot six for six and the Hornets shot four for four.
Several free throws brought the score to 39-40 into the fourth quarter, the Hornets trailing by one point.
ESU took the lead in the fourth quarter on a layup by Jessica Wayne, sophomore guard, the score now 53-52. The Lions found a breakaway layup with only one minute remaining, but Missouri Southern held onto the lead.
A successful shot by Emily Miller, junior guard, brought within two points.
The Hornets could not pull off the win as they fell 62-55 after more completed free throws from the Lions.
