The Hornet baseball team, ranked 15th, continued their winning streak with a three-game road sweep of Nebraska-Kearney last weekend.
Saturday’s game was closer than the final score suggested. The Hornets entered the top of the ninth inning clinging to a 3-0 lead before a 6-run explosion put the contest well out of reach. Headed by six scoreless innings from Tyler Stubblefield, junior pitcher, the ESU pitching staff was able to complete the 9-0 shutout. It was a successful day all around as seven Hornet batters had RBIs and nine recorded hits on the day.
ESU jumped to an early 7-1 lead after three innings on way to a 14-6 route on the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Levi Ashmore, junior shortstop, led the Hornet attack, going four for six with a homer and four RBIs in the game.
The Hornets had to mount a furious comeback to complete the sweep in Sunday’s nightcap. In the bottom of the first, a lengthy two-out rally by Kearney saw the Hornets trailing 6-1 heading into the second inning.
ESU’s bullpen would do its part, holding the Lopers scoreless for the rest of the game. ESU would break through with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to claim the lead for good. Garrett Brummett, senior pitcher, recorded the win with 4 innings of scoreless work in relief.
The sweep improved the Hornets’ overall record to 21-6 with a 13-3 record in conference play.
