The Emporia State baseball team, ranked 30th, started off their 3-0 sweep against Pittsburg State with a 13-3 victory in the first game Feb. 26 in Emporia.
Pitt state scored two runs off of four hits to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Hornets made two runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Alex White, junior infielder, hit a single up the left field line and Wade Hanna, junior outfielder, scored off of a Gorilla error. Taylor Steen, senior catcher, made a single, bringing White home.
The Hornets lead the Gorillas 6-2 in the sixth. Emporia had a 9-2 lead going into the seventh inning stretch. Pitt scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but BJ Dean, junior outfielder, hit a three run homer. The final score was 13-3.
Emporia came back that Saturday to defeat Pitt 22-7 in seven innings. The Hornets trailed at the end of the first inning 2-1. Emporia then came back and scored three in the third inning putting them up 4-2. They lead the rest of the game.
Emporia State came back that Sunday and received their second run rule against Pitt State, ending the game 20-5. If one team is ahead by 10 runs after the end of the seventh inning, the game is automatically over.
The Hornets started off with five runs in the first and the Gorillas made one run. The score was 5-1.
The Hornets kept their lead the rest of the game and received their victory in seven innings. This season opening sweep improved the Hornets record to 9-3 on the year.
Emporia State host Lincoln University of Missouri at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4 at the Trusler
