The April Huddleston, head softball coach, era of Emporia State softball began last weekend in Durant, Oklahoma during a three day tournament. The team started the season 2-4. ESU softball lost to Oklahoma Christian, Arkansas Tech and Henderson State twice.
After the initial loss to Henderson State, ESU rebounded by defeating the host school, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, twice.
In their two victories, ESU outscored their opponents 21–8. On the weekend, however, Emporia State was outscored 25–36.
Sarah Glass, a junior infielder, led the way offensively for the Lady Hornets. Glass hit 9-20 on the weekend, hitting two home runs with a double, while adding three Runs Batted In.
Erica Harper, junior outfielder and defensive player, had a strong spring debut for the Lady Hornets, hitting .316, contributing four runs, six hits with a double and a home run, while tacking on a team leading 5 RBI’s.
Marly Carmona, sophomore infielder, and Caitlyn VanVleck, sophomore outfielder, each stole two bases for the Lady Hornets, with Glass and Moran Fisher, junior, each adding one.
In the circle, Eryn Stockman, junior pitcher and infielder, pitched 20 innings through three complete games, and striking out 21 players.
Emporia State will play six games at the Arkansas-Monticello Tournament in Bentonville, Arkansas, February 12th to 14th. They will play Henderson State in the first round.
