The new registered student organization, Hornets for Hope: Students Against Suicide, will be tabling from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 6-9 in the Memorial Union main street.
“Our focus right now is to get the information out there hope for more people to join the organization,” said Melissa Kurtenbach, Hornets for Hope adviser and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention board member. “We’re also going to use this time to promote our suicide walk and ask for volunteers to help with or participate in it.”
This is the organization’s first year as an RSO and will be the first student organization on campus to work with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, according to Kurtenbach.
“We really want to ease the college community into the information because it is a tough subject to talk about,” Kurtenbach said.
During their tabeling, the organization will be handing out different information each day to correspond with that day’s theme. There will also be the chance to win prizes with the largest prize being a “Be the Voice” T-Shirt on Friday, according to Kurtenbach.
“It’s peer to peer education, students helping student talk about this issues and allowing them to reach out for help,” Kurtenbach said.
Hornets for Hope: Student Against Suicide will have a table at the Student Wellness Center open house on Sept. 20 and their walk to fight suicide on Sept. 24.
