The Emporia State women’s basketball team improved their record to 15-3 with a 53-41 victory over Washburn last Saturday. The win extended the Lady Hornets’ win streak over the Ichabods to eight in a row.
The Lady Hornets flew out of the gate to a 6-0 start. They finished the quarter on the wrong side of an 11-3 Ichabod’s run and trailed 11-9 after one quarter. Over the next two quarters, ESU outscored the Bods by 20. ESU won both the second and third quarters by 10 points in route to their 12-point win.
Neither team shot well from the floor, with the Hornets shooting 33.9 percent and Washburn shooting 30 percent. Neither team shot better than 25 percent from three.
The daunting stat of the day was the Lady Hornets rebounds as they topped Washburn with a 43-32 edge. The 41 points were the fewest points either team has allowed in the series history. Kathryn Flott, junior forward, led ESU in scoring with 14 points and had a double-double with 15 rebounds. Kelsey Barnwell, senior guard, was the only other Lady Hornet in double figures with 11 points.
Next up for the Lady Hornets is traveling to Bolivar, Missouri to take on Southwest Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. tonight.
