From their home pitch, Emporia State soccer claimed the victory over Northern State 3-1, making two consecutive goals during play on Sept. 14.
Despite the Hornets racking up five corners and three shots in the first 20 minutes of play, the Hornet women were kept off the board. The Wolves made the first score of the game close to the 23 minute mark to take the 1-0 lead.
The Hornets quickly responded, as junior midfielder Megan Jeremias received an assist from sophomore forward Megan Kephart in the 29th minute and scored. The Hornets attempted two more shots but couldn’t score before the break, leaving the score 1-1.
In the first half, ESU forced four saves on the Wolves goalkeeper, having outshot Northern State 7-3.
Senior defender Abby Bachman scored directly from a corner kick to advance the Hornets after the break. ESU continued to put pressure on the Northern State defense as the second half carried on, which allowed them to score in the 63rd minute.
The Hornets failed to score on a corner kick that was cleared by Northern State. With efforts from sophomore defender Aubrey Seltman and Kephart, graduate student defender Peyton Pipes scored to increase the Hornet lead 3-1 with 27 minutes remaining.
ESU kept control of the game on both sides of the ball to close out the game and assure their 3-1 win.
The Hornets will now travel to Colorado to face off against the Regis Rangers on Friday, Sept. 19. Kickoff against the Rangers is set for 7 p.m. Mountain time. ESU will then play against CSU-Pueblo on Sunday, Sept. 21 before heading home.
