Hornet Soccer saw a 0-0 tie and took home a win over the weekend in games against Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern.
During their Oct. 10 game against the Gorillas, the Hornets were down as many as two players during play. In the first half, the Gorillas took a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal and outshot the Hornets 6-3. They went on to outshoot Emporia State 2-1 in the beginning of the second half.
ESU senior midfielder Mikhaela Goen and freshman defender Morgan Davis each earned two yellow cards, putting them out of the match at the 74 and 81 minute marks respectively.
While the tie put ESU up in the MIAA standings, neither ESU nor Pitt State were able to score, making for a 0-0 tie.
Oct. 12 saw a different story as the Hornets advanced their streak of zero losses to six. A first-half goal assisted the Hornets in taking home the 1-0 on-the-road win.
ESU got off the first five shots of the match in the first 21 minutes. In the 23rd minute, Missouri Southern recorded their first shot, forcing a save from senior goalkeeper Mackenzi Goen.
The 36th minute saw the only goal scored in the game. Junior midfielder Megan Jeremias made the goal for the Hornets off assists by junior defender Ruby Ryan and freshman midfielder Sammy Quiroz.
Another save was forced from Mackenzi Goen in the 39th, but ESU remained ahead going into the break. In the second half, ESU recorded 13 shots, which forced saves on the Lions, and defended five shots. Goen tallied two more saves as the Hornets preserved the 1-0 lead all the way to victory.
Hornet soccer currently sits at an overall record of 7-3-1 on the season, and is in the No. 3 spot in the MIAA conference. ESU soccer will enter its homestand of the season where they will now host four consecutive matches at the ESU Pitch. Their first home matchup will be against Rogers State at 2:30 PM on Oct. 17, followed by Northeastern State at 1:00 PM on Oct. 19.
