Halloween is here, but what if you’re getting ready to hit the town with you friends and you still don’t have a costume prepared?
A few stores in Emporia like Balloons by Ernie on Commercial Street and Walmart carry costumes, but even that may not be an option for some people. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
For the first costume idea, you only need a white shirt, pants, a white sheet, some safety pins, and sandals. Put on the white shirt, pants, and sandals. Then, take the white sheet and wrap it under one arm and over the opposite shoulder. Use a safety pin or two to pin the sheet on top of your shoulder. After less than 10-15 minutes, you have the infamous, college-appropriate Greek toga costume. If you wish, add wreath of cheap, plastic leaves (or even real leaves) to place on your head.
Another quick costume calls for a black sheet, shirt, pants, shoes, and some scissors. Put on the black shirt, pants, and shoes. Take the black sheet and use the scissors to cut up the bottom with a jagged edge. Then, cut two holes in the top for your eyes. Use your hands to rip up the bottom further.
Place the sheet over your head, and voilà – you are now a dementor from “Harry Potter.” To make your dementor costume even more convincing, make the bottom a little dirty – rub a little dirt or mud on it. It should take about 30 minutes to make this magical costume.
If you don’t want to use sheets for your costume, there are still other options. For this next piece, get some cardboard boxes, tape, a piece of fabric, darker clothing and some scissors.
Break down the boxes and use the scissors to cut out the shape of a sword and shield. Take the piece of fabric and tape it to the back of your shield. Wear the darker clothing and carry the sword and shield to be a warrior. This costume takes roughly 30-40 minutes to complete.
Don’t have 30 minutes to spare, or even 10? For an easy fix, snag your lanyard, a piece of paper, markers and a camera, and you can easily make a paparazzi costume.
Take the paper and markers to create a sign saying “press pass,” and attach the press pass to the lanyard. Wear normal, everyday clothes and walk around with the camera.
Looking to go a little more clever and abstract? Print out multiple pages of gray paint samples and tape them all to your shirt and go as “50 Shades of Gray.”
If you find yourself without costume and unable to venture out to any stores, don’t lose hope. Creating your own costume can be more eyecatching, as well as saving you money – which is something every college student likes to hear.
