Albert Taylor Hall was nearly a full house Friday, Oct. 25 as the Black Student Union hosted Stomp the Graveyard, their seventh annual Step Show.
Tayler Wash, senior elementary education major and president of BSU, said this year was different because it featured the first fraternity group to participate.
Sigma Sigma Sigma, the reigning champions, lost the title to Phi Delta Theta. Second place was awarded to Chi Omega, while Zeta Phi Beta took third.
The show incorporated a horror movie theme as well as a wide variety of hip hop, rock, dubstep and pop music. The winning group blended their step routine with comedy, as well as elements of breakdance, concluding with a rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”
“Everyone has been rehearsing since school started,” Wash said.
Dance groups representing Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Chi Omega, Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Delta Theta competed in this year’s Halloween-themed show.
“I thought the show was really good,” said Elizabeth Ross, junior secondary education in history major and member of Alpha Sigma Alpha. ”It was a really good competition just all across the board. They all rocked it.”
Sigma Sigma Sigma incorporated a police and inmate theme into their performance, using music from Skrillex, DMX and Beyoncé.
Alpha Sigma Alpha and Chi Omega’s dance routines – inspired by classic horror films – also fit the Stomp the Graveyard theme. The latter group gave their routine a mental asylum theme and used “Outta Your Mind” by Lil Jon and LMFAO and “Cannibal” by Ke$ha.
Continuing the horror theme, Zeta Phi Beta’s two-girl group routine paid homage to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
“Everybody really stepped it up this year,” said Jamarious Wicker, senior theater major and host of Stomp the Graveyard.
While the judges tallied up the votes, the five competing groups – as well as some enthusiastic audience members – joined each other on the stage for once last dance.
Stomp the Graveyard also helped back to the community. Audience members who brought a canned food item received $1 off of admission. The canned food was donated to the Salvation Army after the show.
