After committee reports at the Associated Student Government meeting Oct. 24 in the Senate Chamber, there were preliminary readings of requests from seven new student organizations seeking recognition by ASG.
Six of the groups, Muslim Student Association, Stingers Sports Club, Oxfam America Club at Emporia State, Arabic Student Culture Association, Chi Alpha Epsilon and Kansas Art Education Association, had their requests approved. They will have to wait until the general order of the next senate meeting, when the final vote on their status will take place.
However, the improv group Zoiks!, whose bill was sponsored by Julia Ma, ASG senator and junior biochemistry, molecular biology and Spanish major, moved to have their vote for recognition in the same session as first reading.
Despite an initial challenge by, Josiah D’Albini, ASG senator, vice president pro tempore and senior sociology major, Ma prevailed in her request, and was re-recognized in time for their performance, last Wednesday, after losing their RSO (Registered Student Organization) status at a senate meeting in mid-September.
At the start of the meeting, Racheal Countryman, ASG president and senior communication major, announced the creation of a new position in ASG, the community liaison.
Countryman said student government created the position “to enhance our relationship with the city of Emporia, Flint Hills Technical College, and the school district.”
Justin Rahe, sophomore communication major, was appointed as the first student to fill on this role.
She also gave an update on the Can the Bods competition with Washburn, saying ESU is well on their way.
Marissa Gerrman, ASG vice president and senior marketing major, said she had created a group for ASG on Facebook to help ease communications.
“This does not replace email,” she said.
Gerrman also announced that Ma was voted the September Senator of the Month.
Molly Poe, junior elementary education major and coordinator for Community Hornets, told the senate about upcoming volunteer opportunities in the community and asked senators to help spread the word about the events, or volunteer themselves.
A few events Poe listed for November were Food for Students, Happy Holidaze and Christmas Kettle Kickoff. Information for these community service events is the HornetLife webpage.
Teri Whitson, ASG treasurer and junior accounting major, reported that ASG raised $1,960 through Homecoming Tshirt sales.
The next ASG meeting will be at 5:15 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Senate Chambers.
