The Emporia State Lady Hornet volleyball team tacked on two wins to their record this weekend with a 3-0 win over Southwest Baptist Bearcats and a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburg State Gorillas.
Friday, the Bearcats took an early lead in the opening set, but a 6-1 rally by the Lady Hornets tied the score at 6-6.
The set saw 12 more ties before the Lady Hornets increased their lead to 22-20 and went on to win 25-22. ESU took control of the second set, beating the Bearcats 25-18 and coasted through the third and final set, 25-15.
“We have been working on our defense all week in practice and it really showed this game,” said Shayla Cotman, sophomore hitter.
Two players finished the night in double figures. Cotman had ten kills and four blocks with an outstanding .909 hitting percentage. Katie Deutschmann, senior hitter, added 11 kills and one block. Josie Williams, sophomore hitter, also added eight kills.
“In the last game against them (PSU) we won in every other aspect of the game, except the game itself,” said Williams. “So I think if we play well and stay at this level we will be fine.”
The Lady Hornets were looking for revenge Saturday against the Gorillas. Neither team could get traction in the first set, which had 13 ties and three lead changes. The biggest lead was a two-point lead for the Hornets who took the set 27-25.
PSU evened the match 1-1 with a 27-25 win in the second but the Hornets recovered, winning the next two sets 25-17 to take the match 3-1.
Courtney Haring, senior, had a total of 17 kills and eight blocks. Spicer joined her in double figures with 15 kills and two blocks.
“We lost to them earlier n the season, so I think we came out with a lot of fire,” Haring said in an interview the Emporia Gazette. “We really watched and studied the tape (from the last meeting) and knew what we needed to do and got the job done.”
The Hornets finish up their season this weekend with back-to-back home games against Nebraska-Kearney Friday and Fort Hays State Saturday at White Auditorium.
