November 4th, or Election Day, should be a national holiday.
Students should be able to have the day off of school or work to go out to vote. It is essential to our country’s democracy that everyone has enough time to vote for who they want to see in office.
Instead of a bogus holiday that allows people to get out of work and school, like Columbus Day, Election Day would actually serve a purpose and benefit our society. Columbus Day does nothing for us as a country and shouldn’t be a national holiday to begin with.
Christopher Columbus sailed to the new world and did nothing but steal from the locals, take their resources, slaughter countless people, and leave without contributing anything to the progress of the development of the new world, unless you count genocide as a contribution. There is no logical reason to celebrate Columbus Day, not when we could be celebrating something more important like citizens exercising their right to vote.
Though Columbus Day was on the 13th of this month, it still deserves to be replaced by a worthy holiday. Some states like Hawaii, South Dakota and Alaska don’t even observe Columbus Day as a holiday.
The United States should not be recognizing mock holidays. It makes our country look childish, like we are stuck in early grade school and are wanting to celebrate everything from raising our hands in class and not being disruptive to using the toilet correctly when we have to go to the bathroom.
Rather than celebrating nonsense, Election Day would serve as a glimmering light in a pitch-black cave full of rubbish. It would also encourage those who don’t vote because of a time constraint to get out and vote.
Not only will more people theoretically turn out to vote, students would get out of class and spend the day either researching the candidate they want to vote for and voting, or simply get a day off of school because the country is determining its future.
Election Day should be a national holiday, not because students need another reason to get out of school, but because they would be doing their country a service by submitting their vote and furthering the democratic system.
Enough of the phony holidays like Columbus Day. We need a wholesome American holiday that promotes our rights and serves a purpose.
