The Emporia State women’s soccer team spent the weekend in Minnesota, where they won their third straight game in St. Cloud before losing to the nationally ranked Winona State.
Elizabeth High, senior forward, started the scoring out Friday with a goal in the 28th minute. Amelie Heun, freshman middle forward, increased the Hornets’ lead in the 60th minute but St. Cloud answered with a goal of their own. Yadira River, sophomore goalkeeper, had five saves – three of which happened in the last seven minutes of play.
The Hornets went into Sunday with the best start in school history to take on #13 Winona State. Both teams went scoreless for the first 60 minutes but by the 70 minute mark, the Warriors had put four points on the board to give the Lady Hornets their first loss of the season. The Warriors outshot the Hornets 21-6, 11 of which came in the final 11 minutes. Rivera had 10 saves for the day.
At 7 p.m. tomorrow, the hornets return home for their season home opener against Washburn University at Emporia High School.
