Department chairs and academic advisers began communicating via email which programs will be suspended at Emporia State on Tuesday.
The emails sent to students assured them that they will be able to complete affected programs as planned and that “this change only affects future enrollments for this program.” Future students will not be allowed to enroll in suspended programs, according to interim provost Brent Thomas.
All suspended programs would be informed by their department chairs by Friday, said Gwen Larson, director of media relations. The university does not plan to share a full list of the affected departments in one communication, Larson said.
On Sept. 14, the Kansas Board of Regents approved a justification from ESU that allowed the university to dismiss 33 faculty and staff, including tenured faculty. Now ESU is continuing its plan for restructuring, which includes program and course suspension.
“What campus is going to see is announcements from the specific departments and programs as they roll out information about reinvestment and realignment of those programs,” Larson said.
Academic advisors will work with students to help them complete their courses needed to graduate, Larson said. Department chairs are also developing continuation and completion plans for students already enrolled in affected programs, according to Thomas.
