Director of Athletics David Spafford announced his retirement from Emporia State Tuesday. Spafford has worked at ESU since July 2022.
Following Spafford’s exit, Senior Associate Athletic Director Colleen Mischke and Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Rodecap will co-lead as interim athletic directors. According to the official communication from the Office of the President, the University will form a seven-person advisory board to facilitate the search process for the next permanent director.
“During his tenure, David began the work to modernize the athletics program,” said ESU President Ken Hush in the communication. “He oversaw the completion of several capital improvement projects, expanded game day broadcast coverage to additional markets and hired new coaches and leadership who will continue to take athletics to the next level.”
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Billeter and Head Football Coach Garin Higgins will also take on extra responsibilities. Billeter will serve as strategic advisor of ONE ESU Team Culture. Higgins will do the same as strategic advisor of community engagement.
“We will continue to build this program to create the best student and community experience, achieve excellence and win championships. Please join me in thanking David for his service, contributions and in wishing him all the best in his retirement,” said Hush.
