Of the handful of U.S. presidencies I have lived through, and the even smaller number that I remember, I have never seen one so firmly founded in hate.
The lengths this administration has proved it will go to in order to expel undocumented immigrants from this country is egregious.
They’ve been scapegoated by the current administration as the enemy in this country to convince Americans that they are the root of their problems, not a government unwilling to do something about those problems.
The current administration has attacked transgender people in this country, diversity equity and inclusion initiatives that ensure those across all identities have access to things like education and jobs, the bodily autonomy of women, birthright citizenship and more. All things brought out of hate and loathing.
Donald Trump has even withdrawn the U.S. from the World Health Organization, an organization we helped to found and have been a part of since 1948. Do you really believe he cares deeply about the well-being of the American people?
Let us not forget those who Trump has made the face of his campaign: the billionaires in his pocket, namely Elon Musk.
Elon Musk, the richest man in the world. Elon Musk, who spoke at a far-right Alternative für Deutschland rally in Germany. Elon Musk who, twice, did a Nazi salute after the current president’s inauguration.
Elon Musk whose actions caused the Lemkin Institute to issue a Red Flag Alert for genocide in the United States.
People will tell you that is “not what he meant,” that he was just signaling his heart going out to the crowd, but one does not just “accidentally” mimic a Nazi salute without understanding its implications.
Unfortunately, this is just the short list. It does not even scratch the surface of things this administration has done in its first seven days and what it plans to do over the course of the next four years.
My mind may be jumbled, it may be convoluted and unclear reeling with the “shock and awe” that this wave of the Trump administration has enlisted on the country, but I can think clearly about one thing:
The Trump administration is one filled with hate, and its actions as they currently stand are only a small look into what is to come.
