Emporia State men’s and women’s tennis made their home debuts of the spring season this past weekend, wrapping up the weekend with two wins.
The women’s team started their spring season against Ottawa University on Feb. 8. In the first doubles match, senior Paige Stranghoner and sophomore Lilie Bizouerne took a 6-2 victory to put the Hornets on the board first. In the second doubles match, junior Sheriden Wichman and senior Anastasia Pesic took a commanding 6-0 win.
The Hornets continued their hot streak in singles play where Giovanna Ferreira, Yuliya Klimova, Bizouerne and Wichman all won their matches respectively. ESU took the match 5-0.
Men’s tennis started their season also taking on the Ottawa Braves on Feb. 9. In number two doubles, sophomore Mostafa Elbasnaly and senior Hachem Fahem took a 6-1 victory, followed by a 6-4 win in the number three doubles match from junior Gwendal Mazuay and freshman Alexis Mattenberger.
During the first singles match, Anton Sarunic put ESU on the board with victories at 6-2 and 6-1. Elbasnaly, Fahem, sophomore Diego Calvo and Mazuay followed suit. Mattenberger secured ESUs double tennis victory with his first collegiate match at number six singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Women’s tennis will be back in action on Feb. 16 against McPherson College, a match up previously scheduled for Feb. 7.
