The Emporia State men’s tennis team beat Sterling College 7-0 Saturday at the Kossover Family Tennis Center to advance the Hornets to 4-0 on the season.
All three double matches were victories for the Hornets by 6-2 scores. Senior Anton Sarunic and freshman Luke West took a win at No. 1 doubles and senior Hachem Fahem and sophomore Mostafa Elbasnaly at No. 2. Junior Gwendal Mazuay and freshman Alexis Mattenberger clinched the triple victory in No. 3 doubles.
Starting off singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 was Sarunic, followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 by Elbasnaly. Claiming the dual win for ESU was Fahem with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. At No. 4, junior Duvan Santiago Torres won 6-1, 6-2. Mattenberger won at No. 5 with the same score as Torres.
Finishing out the win against Sterling was Mazuay with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Women’s tennis defeated Seward County Community College with a 5-1 exhibition win at home on the following Sunday.
The doubles team of junior Sheriden Wichman and senior Paige Stranghoner brought in a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles while the No. 1 combo of sophomore Perla Conde and sophomore Lilie Bizouerne gave ESU the upper hand with a 1-0 lead after winning 6-3 to give ESU the upper hand with a 1-0 lead.
Due to the Saints only having five players, the Hornets started singles play with a 2-0 lead. That lead increased to 3-0 when freshman Yuliya Klimova won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Conde won her singles match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3 followed by a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles by Bizouerne. Senior Anastasia Pesic finished out play for the Hornets with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 5 singles.
Seward took the win in the No. 1 singles slot.
Both ESU tennis teams will travel to Lubbock, Texas for a dual against Metropolitan State University of Denver on Friday, Feb. 28.
