On Apr. 6, Albert Taylor Hall was the place where Kappa Alpha Psi members gathered before the community to welcome a new member to their circle. In a ceremony dubbed a “Neophyte Presentation,” existing members of the Mu Alpha Chapter inducted Kobe Washington with a series of exercises intended to prove his dedication to the fraternity. New members are masked during the ceremony, only removing their masks once they have passed their tests.
The decision to join Kappa was a simple choice for Washington, a general studies senior. Washington is a legacy, who’s been a member of Kappa Alpha Psi for, in his own words, “forever and a day.” His father being a member of Kappa is initially what drew Washington to the fraternity.
“I experienced first hand about the good Kappa Alpha Psi does for the community, and the bond between people,” he said.
Exposed to excellence at a young age, Washington plans to continue the legacy, saying “growing up seeing (my dad) and other members connect to help each other’s people around them was very inspirational.”
Guy Ramos, a senior computer science major, has been a member of Kappa for two years and says the fraternity seeks excellence when inducting new members.
“We strive for achievement every day, no matter what it is,” said Ramos, who currently serves as the president, or polemarch, of the fraternity.
As the ceremony commenced, the lights in Albert Taylor Hall came up and the room broke into dance. Members of Kappa Alpha Psi rushed the stage to dance with their new brother as the women of Kappa Delta Chi danced through the aisles of the auditorium, filling the room with joy and togetherness on a Saturday night.
