Despite holding Missouri Western to 16 points below their average, the Lady Hornets suffered a 51-61 loss against the Griffons on Feb. 10.
The Griffons made the first six points of the game leading the game 6-0 against the Hornets. Nearly seven minutes into the game, the Hornets finally scored and rendered the Griffons scoreless for the final four minutes. However, the Griffons remained in the lead by the end of the first 10-8.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Missouri Western took a 19-10 lead before forward Faith Paramore scored an additional six points for the Hornets. Sophomore guard Stevie Stinchcomb followed suit with a three-pointer that tied the score 27-27 and two free-throws by Gracie Gilpin later boosted the tie 29-29. Despite large strides by the Hornets, the Griffons were ahead 31-29 by the half.
When the game resumed for the third quarter, the Griffons strengthened their lead 36-30. Efforts by Stinchcomb led the Hornets to a short-lived 38-36 lead, but Missouri Western scored the next five points of the game bringing the score to 41-38. At the end of the quarter, Gilpin tied the score 41-41 thanks to shooting a three-pointer.
More back-and-forth ensued in the final quarter of the game. With the Griffons ahead, Queen Ulabo scored to bring the score up 47-50. Afterward, the Griffons assumed a 4-point gain before Stinchcomb’s attempt at a two possession game. However, a three-pointer by Missouri Western raised the score 57-49. After Paramore’s two free-throws, the Hornets only scored once more before the buzzer and fell short in the final score of 51-61.
Paramore led the Hornets with 10 rebounds during the game. She also accomplished her tenth double-double of the year with 14 points despite the loss. Stinchcomb followed suit with 13 points in doubles.
