Hornet baseball returned to Trusler Sports Complex for the first time this season in two double header matchups in nonconference play against Colorado School of Mines on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10.
In the first game of the series, Mines took a quick 1-0 lead after the conclusion of the first inning. However, the Hornets rallied back in the bottom of the second with a score by catcher Austin Hamm.
Innings three through five all resulted in a stalemate, with neither team scoring until the top of the sixth, where the Orediggers had a pop up into right field.
Mason Sturdy of ESU doubled to center field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 3-2 win for the Hornets.
The Hornets went on to win the second game of the day with a 5-4 victory in an 11 inning game. ESU tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, followed by scoreless eighth, ninth, and tenth innings. The Hornets would ultimately score a point in the bottom of inning 11, claiming both games of the day.
ESU started out day two with another win against the Orediggers, with a final score of 2-0 in seven innings. This win allowed ESU to claim the series going into game four.
Despite their claim on the series, game four proved to be a battle for the Hornets after giving up a total of ten points to the Mines. The Mines scored first taking a 5-1 lead going into the fourth.
The Hornets were unable to make a comeback late in the game after the Mines scored one point in the fifth and sixth innings, followed by three more in the top of the seventh.
The Mines would end the series taking a 10-1 victory over the Hornets in the fourth game.
The Hornets are now 5-2 on the season and currently stand in the No. 6 spot in MIAA play. ESU will return to Trusler on Feb. 16 to battle off against the Thunderwolves of Colorado State University Pueblo out of the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference. The Thunderwolves are currently 2-0 on the season.
