Emporia State volleyball took Northwest Missouri State 3-2 Wednesday in a 5-set match at White Auditorium.
The Bearcats opened the first set of the match scoring the first three points. A kill by junior outside/right side hitter Camilla Ossola from sophomore setter Brailee Bogle brought the score up 1-3. Freshman outside hitter Rayishon Jackmon and freshman middle blocker Mia Frisbie blocked an attack from NWMS that raised the score 2-3.
A kill by senior middle/right side hitter McKenya Sorrells later in the set brought the Hornets within 3 points of NWMS 8-11, but they would continue to fall short leaving the Bearcats to claim the set 25-17.
ESU recovered in the second set with a 25-12 claim, but just barely fell to the Bearcats again in the third 21-25.
The Hornets rallied back in the fourth set, shortly falling behind 3-2 in the beginning before controlling most of the set for the rest of play. Ossola scored the last two points of the set off of Brailee Bogle, using a kill to close out with a 25-22 Hornet win.
The fifth and final set of the match saw a trade off of points between ESU and NWMS.
The Bearcats scored the first three points of the set and Ossola would score the first two points for the Hornets. With the score at 2-5, the Hornets scored 4 consecutive points off kills from sophomore middle blocker Lillian Zeigler, senior outside hitter Weronika Wrzesinska and Bogle, bringing the score 6-5. The Bearcats later tied the score 6-6 before a kill by Wrzesinska increased the Hornets’ lead 7-6. ESU and NWMS later tied again 13-13 before Wrzesinska broke the tie again to give the Hornets a 14-13 lead.
The Hornets ultimately claimed the set 15-13 and took the match 3-2.
Hornet Volleyball is currently 7-4 in conference play and 15-6 overall on the season. They are set to play Missouri Western at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31 at White Auditorium for Halloween Fright Night.
