Emporia State Associated Student Government (ASG) finished elections earlier this semester with a large boost in voter numbers. Along with senator positions being filled, the new president and vice president for this coming school year were elected.
This was the first time since COVID-19 that ASG did in-person voting, according to Azwad B. Arif, ASG Election Commissioner and freshman computer science major. ASG nearly met its goal to receive 214 votes, the turnout was 204, according to Sophia Dawson, new ASG vice president and junior business administration major.
Thirteen members ran for different positions and almost all of them ran without opposition, including the incoming president and vice president, Ashley Serrano and Dawson, according to Arif.
“It feels good,” said Serrano, new ASG President and junior accounting major. “It’s a little overwhelming because there’s a lot of stuff we are already learning that I didn’t know beforehand as just being a senator. But it’s really exciting though.”
Serrano has served on ASG for two years as a senator for the business school and as chair of the Fiscal Affairs Committee, according to Serrano. Dawson has served for one year as the senate operations chair and also served the student government at Butler community college, according to Dawson.
“The things I did at my community college as vice president really prepared me for my role here in senate operations,” Dawson said.
Their administration goals are surrounded by three words; visibility, sincerity and enrichment, according to both Serrano and Dawson. They have goals to make transfer and international students feel welcome and continue the sustainability initiatives the current ASG President and vice president have been working on.
