Emporia State men’s basketball team fell at home against the Fort Hays State Tigers on Sunday. The Tigers outrebounded the Hornets 34-19 and scored 11 points more making the final score Emporia State 53, Fort Hays 74.
Levelle Zeigler, junior psychology major, scored ESU’s first point of the game from a free throw, Kaden Evans, sophomore marketing major, made a three-pointer and Alijah Comithier, junior communication major, would be fouled on his next shot. Once Comithier made his free throw that gave the Hornets their only lead of the game 7-6. The team held their lead for 21 seconds.
The Hornets fought to tie the game before the first half was over. With three minutes left in the half, the team was down only two points 28-26, but the Tigers pulled ahead ending the half at 34-26.
Zeigler came out and hit a three-pointer right after half. The Tigers then had an unanswered 9-0 run. The Hornets never caught back up to their opponents and would lose the game.
The leading scorer for the Hornets was HPER graduate student Sam Baker hitting four three-pointers. Red shirt sophomore psychology major Mayuom Buom led the team with three rebounds. Fort Hays’ leading scorer was Elijah Nnnabu with 19 points. Gabe Pieschl and Bjarni Jonsson led with seven rebounds.
The Hornets will take on Northeastern State at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the William L. White Auditorium.
