The Lady Hornets swept Missouri Western to advance to 33-18 in the season last weekend in St. Joseph, Missouri.
ESU won 2-1 in game one. Both teams scored all their runs in the first inning.
Danielle Sprinkle, freshman, designated hitter, hit a two-run home run in the top of the first. Caitlin VanVleck, freshman, right fielder, also scored. The Lady Hornets had nine hits in 29 at bats as a team for a .310 batting average. Kaitlyn Caston, senior, picked up her 15th win of the season on the piching rubber. She only gave up four hits on one earned run.
Game two was more of an offensive dual as the Lady Hornets won 5-1. Caston picked up her second win of the day and 16th of the season. She gave up one run on seven hits.
The first run came when Sprinkle singled to left to score Steph Goodwin, senior. Caston hit an RBI single to right to score VanVleck from third for run number two.
Sprinkle scored on a wild pitch for run number three and finished the scoring for the inning. Caston hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, which also scored Sprinkle. The Griffons scored one to end the scoring for the day and end the game.
Today the Hornets travel to Overland Park for the first round of the MIAA playoffs.
