In a doubleheader rescheduled from March 31, Emporia State softball swept Washburn in Topeka to take the season series 3-1 on Tuesday. The Hornets won the afternoon game 7-5 in 11 innings and then won 6-1 in the nightcap.
Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings in game one until Washburn got on the board with a solo homerun in the fourth and fifth.
ESU began their scoring threat with back-to-back bunt singles by Caitlin VanVleck, junior outfielder, and Annie Rockley, junior outfielder, in the sixth. After a sacrifice bunt advanced them, Hailey Cope, junior infielder, hit a two-out single to tie the score 2-2.
Both teams remained scoreless again through the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings with Hornet starter Eryn Stockman, senior, retiring 13 straight from the fifth into the ninth inning.
Sarah Glass, senior infielder, put the Hornets on top with an RBI-single to left to give ESU a 3-2 lead in the tenth. One out later, Cope hit her second homerun of the season to put the Hornets up 5-2. The Ichabods answered with three of their own in the bottom of the tenth to tie the game 5-5.
With a runner on second to start the 11th inning, Stockman smashed a two-run homer to give the Hornets a 7-5 lead and the win.
In game two, both teams went scoreless through the first three innings again until Washburn took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Danielle Sprinkle, junior outfielder, tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the fifth. The Hornets scored two more in the sixth on a two-run single from Cope to give them a 3-1 lead. Glass went on to hit a triple down the right field line to score two more runs, and then made it home on a Washburn throwing error to score the final run of the game.
The Hornets (27-19, 10-6 in the MIAA) will wrap up their week with trips to Bolivar and Warrensburn, Missouri this weekend. First pitch on Friday at Southwest Baptist is scheduled for 1 p.m.
