Emporia State hosted J. D. Schramm, ESU alum and Stanford professor last Thursday for this year’s installment of the Hayes Lecture Series. Schramm discussed “envisioning a future for yourself and others.”
“We get to decide how we see (the stories of our lives) interpreted,” Schramm said. “Our thoughts can create the life we want to live into.”
The focus of Schramm’s speech was a set of strategies for setting oneself up for success, regardless of what life brings. One of these strategies involved creating a board with images of what you want to achieve in life, and putting it somewhere you can clearly see it every day.
“Write down what you’re shooting for,” Schramm said. “Document what you have…and reference it. The most successful people have a plan and not enough time.”
The Blue Key Honors Society sponsored and organized the event last Thursday. Dr. Schramm was chosen for this year’s Hayes lecture by the ESU alumni center. According to Bailey Lampton, senior biology major and member of BKHS, the alumni center chooses the Hayes speaker from among ESU alums every year.
“Just keep moving,” said Isaiah Wattree, senior business administration major about Schramm’s message. “The first thing you do won’t always be what you’re best at.”
