Students, fraternities, sororities, dancers, cheerleaders and the band gathered around a bonfire in Wilson park last Friday night to celebrate Homecoming and compete in the annual Yell Like Hell competition.
Groups competed in either the Greek life, recognized student organization or residential life category. They were judged in several categories, including enthusiasm, volume, clarity and creativity, according to Kathryn Martin, who graduated last year and returned to host the Homecoming bonfire for the third time.
Sigma Tau Gamma took first place in the fraternity category, performing a chant that was a mashup of popular songs, including “Yeah” by Usher and “All Star” by Smashmouth.
The Marching Hornets took first place out of the RSOs.
In the sorority category, Chi Omega took first and became repeat champions, after their victory from last year.
According to Sidney Grantham, freshman psychology major and member of Chi Omega, the sorority practiced at least three times a week to prepare for the competition.
“We took 30 to 45 minutes (to practice) every chance we were able,” Grantham said.
“It was a weight off our shoulders,” said Morgan Dewalt, sophomore elementary education major and member of Chi Omega. “We won last year so we knew the other sororities would come up with some awesome stuff.”
“It was extremely close,” Martin said. “It was extremely creative and I’m proud of everyone who competed.”
