The Bulletin has received numerous phone calls from people in the 620 area code who are concerned about calls that have been coming from The Bulletin’s number. These phone calls are not sponsored by The Bulletin and have nothing to do with The Bulletin.
The calls, which started going out on Oct 9, are most likely part of a phishing scam intended to gather personal information. According to callers, they’ve received voicemails and calls about insurance information and pending claims.
There have been approximately 86 calls to The Bulletin’s phone number since Oct. 9, most of which have been about the scam, according to the call logs.
According to one caller, her teenage son received nine calls in a row from The Bulletin’s number.
“Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about others spoofing The Bulletin’s phone number and using it as the caller-ID for scamming calls,” said Cheryl Alvarado, the university’s Voice Network Administrator and Data Center Manager. “We have no way of knowing where those calls actually originate from.”
According to IT’s call records, The Bulletin’s main extension has not placed any outgoing calls within the last month.
“We can be certain the spamming calls did not originate from The Bulletin,” Alvarado said.
The Bulletin has filed a report with ESU Campus Police.
