The IT department at Emporia State has been working to solve connection issues with the new Hornet Nation Wi-Fi on campus.
“Whenever (we) put in new wireless we expect to see some issues because wireless devices all act different,” said Ryan Kurtenbach, director of network and security solutions at the campus IT department.
Slow connection issues can have a large impact on students when they are working on online timed exercises, according to Katlyn Metz, senior sociology major.
“I’m taking several online classes, and I don’t have internet at home so it makes it real difficult to do coursework,” Metz said. “All my quizzes are online, timed, so it’s causing issues there.”
Micayla Davis, junior accounting major, says it is affecting her work in tutoring sessions.
Individual students aren’t the only ones being affected however, Recognized Student Organizations are also having issues involving their meetings.
“I kept trying to log in so I can take notes and send an email to everybody to come to the RSO and it just wouldn’t load,” said Matthew Watson, sophomore accounting major and executive of the gamer’s guild RSO on campus.
A firmware update that took place last Thursday seems to have made an impact on a majority of the situation, said Kurtenbach.
“We believe we have the bulk of the issues fixed with the firmware upgrade we did Thursday night,” Kurtenbach said. “We are going to continue to monitor and make any additional changes as they are needed.”
Kurtenbach expressed gratitude for those reporting the issues they had. He encouraged using specific details when submitting future reports as well, such as where you were when you had issues and the device you were using.
“We’re going to continue to monitor and make changes as necessary for other issues,” Kurtenbach said.
