The Hornets opened up their season at home last Saturday with an 88-81 victory over Texas Woman’s University. This was the Lady Hornets’ 22nd straight home opener win.
The Hornets were led by Tyra Jones, junior forward, with 34 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hornets jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Texas Woman’s called a timeout, and they never trailed again in the game. The Hornets led 21-15 after the first quarter with Jones scoring 12 of her 34 points.
Texas Woman’s College cut the lead to four going into the locker room at halftime, 44-40.
The Lady Hornets opened up the second half with a 12-2 run that forced a timeout. Texas Woman’s college cut the lead to 11 at 69-58 to end the third.
Texas Woman’s College would tie the game at 80 late in the fourth but a strong 8 of 8 from the freethrow line in the final minute of the game closed out the win for the Lady Hornets.
Jones finished with her second straight double double. Emily Miller, junior guard and forward, had 15 points and Jacee Kramer, senior guard, had 13 points and 5 assists.
Next up, ESU will take on University of Nebraska Kearney at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 7 in White Auditorium.
