The Center for Student Involvement will start a social media and cell phone detox program from Feb. 4 to March 5.
“This is (the) first year. I wasworking on it from last semester,” said Alex Gill, senior psychology major who hopes to run this program. “We are hoping to get it running and get some people involved.”
Social media and cell phone are like dopamine and there are many studies and Ted Talks behind the negative impact of social media, and how it can cause metal health problem, according to Gill.
“The idea that social media, you are comparing your own reality in your life to somebody else’s highlight real,” said Rachel Kohman, senior director of CSI. “People put out maybe their best self but you don’t know what’s behind the scene is happening.”
The social media and cell phone detox program will take 30 days, according to Gill.“We want to see if we can get somebody to step back from it, and it helps people in the long run,” Gill said.
During the program, participators will receive an email with an article or a Ted Talk video about the cellphone usage every day, according to Gill.
“At the beginning of the program, there is a detox log in your first week,” Gill said. “Day 5 for example, so once you are on Day 6 you are also going to do the tips from the previous days, you will actually see how much you use it and how much you don’t use it at the end of the month.”
Those interested can sign up in the CSI.
