Emporia State President Allison Garrett sent an email out to campus today announcing that she is holding a meeting at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 5 in the Preston Family Room to continue the discussion about sexual harassment.
The discussions about sexual harassment are in response to articles published in The Bulletin about a sexual misconduct investigation in which “Jane,” an undergraduate Korean student, alleged that Brian Schrader, tenured psychology professor, took her into a storage room, touched her inappropriately and tried to kiss her.
The meeting will be a conversation to help answer questions that were brought up during the town hall Tuesday, Garrett said. Students demanded answers during the town hall and were left with questions about the process and the administration’s response.
This conversation is the next step in campus discussion of sexual harassment, Garrett said.
“During the Town Hall meeting this week, I listened closely to your observations, questions and disappointment,” Garrett wrote in the email. “I heard those who believe that Emporia State silences people who complain. I heard frustration from those who felt powerless to change the culture. I heard those concerned that their primary source of information in this matter was the student newspaper.”
Garrett said she intends to listen to student questions and provide answers “as best as (she) can” at the meeting.
“I hope I will be able to help you understand better how we handle reports of misconduct, including sexual misconduct,” Garrett wrote.
According to the email, Garrett will also be sharing the steps that the university is taking to review policy and procedures.
Schrader is still employed by ESU as of today, according to Human Resources.
