Delta Theta, which is ESU’s recently reactivated chapter of the national Spanish honors society Sigma Delta Pi, is fundraising for the summer Guatemala study abroad trip.
“We’re going to try and raise as much as possible,” said Vanessa Aguilar, secretary and graduate English student.
The chapter was reactivated last semester through the national organization and inducted 12 members, according to Aguilar. They have plans for a spring induction and will start tabling soon to recruit potential members.
To be a member, students must have taken Spanish I, II and III and have a G.P.A. of at least 3.0, according to Aguilar.
Since Spanish Club is an official RSO, Sigma Delta Pi is partnering with them in order to gain potential members and to raise money, according to Linsey Albee, the webmaster and the publicity and social media coordinator and junior spanish major.
The fundraising for the Guatemala trip will be a joint effort between the two organizations, according to Aguilar.
They plan on working with Butter Braid, a frozen pastry fundraising group, to help raise money, according to Albee.
“(How much money they need) also depends on how many students are going,” Aguilar said.
In order for the Guatemala trip to occur, there needs to be a minimum of 13 students going, according to the Spanish Club website. There are several scholarships available to students interested, through Sigma Delta Pi. The deadline for financial aid from the spanish honor society is tonight.
“We’re still in the beginning process and hopefully by the middle of the semester we’ll start really working,” Aguilar said.
