The Emporia State volleyball team ended their season with a 0-3 loss Tuesday against Washburn University during the MIAA tournament. The Hornets ended their season with a overall losing record of 14-18.

“We had highs and lows this season,” said Bing Xu, head coach. “We were battling multiple injuries in the beginning and the middle of the season. The outcome was not what we expected and the season could be better or worse.” 

The Hornets away record was 6-7 during their season. Their last away game before the MIAA was Oct. 20 against Fort Hays State. 

“We have focused on trust and unity this season,” Xu said. “I really see most of players begin to realize and understand that trust and unity are what take to be success as the team and an individual…I am very proud of them for battling all the way to make MIAA Conference Post Season Tournament.” 

The Hornets played in 10 home games over the season with a 5-5 tie. They won their last home game Nov. 3 against Central Oklahoma, with a score of 3-2.

“The last home game against UCO was one of our best games with our libero Allie Maloney breaking the school record for most digs in a game,” said Jennica Smith, sophomore setter. “We all played well and never gave up.” 

This was Xu’s 14th year as head coach, and Carly Spicer’s, assistant coach, third year. 

“I’m sad the season ended the way it did, but we are ready to come back better next year,” Smith said.
