Associated Student Government unanimously approved three resolutions during their senate meeting Oct. 4. The resolutions included one in support of the diversity and inclusion statement in syllabi and another supporting the Faculty Senate resolution to increase the number of military credit hours offered by Emporia State.
SR 19006 “A Resolution in Support of the Diversity and Inclusion Statement,” was created in response to comments made by members of Faculty Senate about removing the statement from syllabi, according to Caylie Ratzlaff, junior social sciences and English major.
Although Faculty Senate met before the Oct. 4 ASG meeting and decided that the statement would remain in syllabi, Ratzlaff believed that it was still important to pass the resolution.
“The reason why it’s still on the agenda tonight is because the diversity and inclusion committee believes that one, we still need to talk about the fact that the statement was being considered for repeal by select members of Faculty Senate,” Ratzlaff said. “Two, as Associated Student Government and the diversity and inclusion committee, we just want to make sure that…Faculty Senate is aware that we’re watching them in that process, that we do have a statement and voice about it.”
The second resolution passed unanimously was SR 19008 “A Resolution in Support of FSR 18001,” which states that ASG is in favor of a resolution passed by Faculty Senate to increase the number of military credit hours.
Currently, ESU offers only 18 hours of military credit, which is the lowest of the regent schools, according to the resolution.
The Faculty Senate resolution allows ESU to expedite the revision process of the military service credit policy and “encourages the University to maximize awarded military credit by awarding up to 25 percent of a student’s total required hours (on average 30 hours),” according to the ASG resolution.
“This will be a great way to show that ASG is here to support our veteran students too, because they are nontraditional students, so making sure that they know that we’re here for them also,” said Michaela Todd, ASG vice president and senior communications and political science major.
The final resolution passed unanimously, SR 19008 “A Resolution in Support of Sexual Assault Survivors,” is in response to “the recent political climate both on and off campus, sexual assault cases have become more prevalent in society” and will be sent to the president, Governor Jeff Colyer, and several other senators and representatives.
During the meeting, ASG also voted to approve three recognized student organizations. Of those three, Criminal Justice Organization and Social Media Ambassadors are new RSOs.
The next ASG meeting will be 5:15 p.m. Oct. 25 in the Senate Chambers.
