The Committee on Campus Governance selected the five members that will serve on the Academic Dishonesty Committee during their Oct. 9 meeting The selection process was done randomly using a selection tool during the meeting.
“My understanding, from Dr. Cordle, is even though it does not specify in the actual UPM, it is ‘you’ve been randomly selected so you have to do it,’” said Bethanie O’Dell, chair of the COCG and virtual learning librarian.
Those selected are John Wade, professor of psychology; Chad Wiley, associate professor of math and economics; Cynthia Kane, professor in University Libraries and Archives; Amanda Lickteig, assistant professor in the School of Leadership and Middle and Secondary Teacher Education; and Lidan Fan, assistant professor of business administration. Emporia State’s policy manual requires the committee to have at least one tenured member, which will be Wade.
It is also required that there be one member from each of the schools or colleges at ESU. This will be the first Academic Dishonesty Committee at ESU, since this is the first occasion of reported academic dishonesty following the creation of the “XF” designation, according to O’Dell.
An “XF” designation is added onto a transcript in cases of academic dishonesty, which include cheating, plagiarism, or other academically unethical activities, according to the university policy manual.
The Academic Dishonesty Committee will evaluate faculty requests to assign a “XF” grade to a student, according to the policy manual. Members will hear from both the faculty member reporting the incident and the student, according to the policy manual.
Members of the COCG committee also voted to have the first members of the Academic Dishonesty committee serve one year terms.
“I think for fairness too, rotating it is better to keep it neutral,” said Stephanie Lanter, assistant professor of art.
The next COCG committee meeting will be 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Xi Phi room.
