Volleyball, cross country and football have multiple events coming up this weekend. Volleyball will play Friday and Saturday at Emporia, football will play Saturday at home and men’s and women’s cross country will travel to Joplin, according to esuhornets.com.
“The first thing we have at home would be volleyball and that’s down at White Auditorium,” said Donald Weast, associate director of intercollegiate athletics. “Right now they’re five and seven. Friday night we’re going to play the No.1 team in the country — Nebraska-Kearney.”
Volleyball is coached by Bing Xu and Carly Spicer.
“(Nebraska-Kearney is) undefeated on the year so it’s going to be a tough task but (Hornet volleyball) have already knocked off the team in the top ten,” Weast said. “They knocked out Rockhurst in Kansas City a couple of weeks ago.”
Tatum Graves, senior middle hitter, was just named the MIAA hitter of the week, according to Weast.
“Saturday they’ll come back and play Fort Hays State, an in-state rival type thing,” Weast said. “Hays is more our speed than Kearney is. Kearney is really good.”
Saturday morning, men’s and women’s cross country are heading to Joplin.
“They’re going to compete in the Southern Stamdpede,” Weast said. “It’s going to be one of the biggest cross country meets in the Midwest. It’s got high school and college division.”
More than 1,000 people are expected to compete.
The football team will be playing the University of Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon. They are currently undefeated this year, according to lopers.com.
“We’ve got an opportunity there to come out and do some things and hopefully get back in the thick of the conference race,” Weast said. “Our passing attack, which is what we’ve been known for the last seven or eight years, has struggled a little bit. We look for that to be an emphasis toward and get that started back up again.”
