At the inaugural Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kansas, the Emporia State track and field team broke a school record and qualified four, provisionally on Saturday.
Taysean Goodwin, freshman, broke the 400m record, formerly set by Duke Tibbs, junior. Goodwin ran the 400m in 47.67 seconds.
Tibbs previously held the record, with a 48.02 mark.
Goodwin nearly broke his previous record in the 4×400 meter relay, joined by teammates Parker Evans, freshman, Luke Stenzel, freshman, and Wyatt Sander, sophomore.
The foursome ran a time of 3:14.40, second only to a time of 3:14.16 that Goodwin, Sander, Colin Coleman, sophomore, and Thomas LaRoche, sophomore, set at the Crimson and Gold invite, earlier this season.
LaRoche, currently ranked 15th in the nation in the 800m, passed former Hornet, Bill Tidwell, with a time of 1:51.72.
Tidwell has held that record since 1956 at Kansas State, when he ran 800m in 1:52.09.
Sarah Hines, freshman, is ranked 22nd in the country in the 60m hurdles. Hines ran a time of 8.76, resetting her time of 2nd all-time position in the 60m hurdles at ESU.
Ranking 27th in the nation in the shot put, Morgan Gilliland, junior, threw 13.76m.
In the final completion before the MIAA championships, the Hornets travel to the K-State and Nebraska Tune-ups next weekend.
