An active shooter alarm that triggered a large police presence at Newman Regional Health Thursday was caused by a “pull switch error,” according to Steve Bazan, a public information officer for the hospital.
At approximately 4:15 p.m., the hospital initiated emergency protocols following the activation of the facility’s active shooter alarm. Shortly afterward, the switch error was determined to have caused the activation.
Police on scene swept the facility and determined there was never a threat to the hospital, Bazan said in a statement. Around 6:35 p.m., authorities issued an all-clear.
The hospital has resumed normal operations with all staff and patients accounted for.
“We are proud of our staff, who performed exceptionally during this incident, demonstrating the effectiveness of our emergency preparedness training,” said Bazan. “We extend our sincere thanks to the brave and prompt Emporia Police Department and Newman Regional Health’s security team.”
