Following their splits on Friday and Saturday, Emporia State Softball fell 6-0 against Southern Arkansas University on Sunday afternoon on the last day of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic.
The Hornets made the only hit within the first two innings before the Muleriders were able to scoring one run on two hits from pitches by senior Gracie Rabe during the third. Rabe would leave the next eleven Muleriders unable to score until the seventh. ESU remained scoreless in the sixth despite getting off two more hits.
Both teams struggled to find any success on offense over the next three innings. Southern Arkansas stepped up to put together five runs on five hits in the seventh, increasing their lead over the Hornets to 6-0.
The Hornets began the inning with a lead off double by junior infielder Leslie Ramos and a hit-by-pitch to freshman utility Kinsey Perine. Junior outfielder Taryn Burkhardt singled to load the bases after two outs, but the Hornets were not able to answer to the Muleriders lead, losing 6-0 against Southern Arkansas.
Emporia State Softball will be back on the field on Friday, Feb. 21 in Topeka for the Washburn Tournament. They will take on Concordia University, St. Paul in their first of six games.
