Flames engulfed the pink building at around 4 a.m. Sunday at Eastwood Lake apartments, 1102 East St.
Five students from Emporia State were affected by the fire, Lynn Hobson, dean of students, confirmed. They were all renting apartments in the building.
“We basically made sure that they had received all of assistance the Red Cross provides, which they all had,” Hobson said.
The university has made funds available so those students who were victims of the fire can eat in the Hornets Nest on campus. The students will also have access to Corky’s Cupboard, which provides students in need with canned and packaged goods. The students’ faculty members were also contacted so they were aware that an emergency situation had occurred.
The Red Cross provided living arrangements for three days.
“The last I heard, all the students had found other arrangements, but I don’t know what those are,” Hobson said.
For the next week, the Center for Student Involvement will be collecting items for those who were affected. Items that are needed include “clothing of all sizes, bottles for an infant, hygiene items, household goods, pots, pans, silverware, dishes, shoes, bedding, blankets (and) sheets,” according to a Buzz In Announcement.
