Turnovers, slow starts cost Hornets in back-to-back losses

The Hornets took two losses in a weekend match up against Oklahoma Baptist and Northwestern Oklahoma.

ESU started the Nov. 28 game against Oklahoma Baptist scoring the first five points and keeping the Bison from scoring. A 12-2 run helped the Bison take a 12-7 lead before they continued with an 8-0 run to go up 20-10.

The Bison ended the half on a 13-2 run to take the lead back 39-25 at the break.

A minute into the second half, senior guard Trey Redd scored to get the Hornets within 39-27. Oklahoma Baptist pulled ahead by as many as 29 points and cruised to a 69–48 win.

On Nov. 29, Hornets struggled to make a comeback after a 15 point deficit, causing them to lose 85-83 against Northwestern Oklahoma.

ESU led at the start 26-18, before the Rangers went on a 21-0 run to gain the lead 39-26. NWOSU maintained the lead 46-37 into the halftime break.

NWOSU got their biggest lead after a free throw in the second half, 67-52. ESU fought back with a 13-0 run to get within two points. A three-pointer from Redd and a layup from freshman forward Treyvon Taylor followed to get ESU within a point.

The Hornets later took the lead 80-78 when junior guard Andrew Pengel hit a three-pointer with three minutes left in the game. The Rangers took the lead back by one point until Jones tied the game with 22.2 seconds left. NWOSU scored a pair of free throws to take the lead 85-83.

After attempting timeouts, and calling a final play, the inbounds pass was not successful and the Hornets could not get a shot off.

The Hornets begin MIAA play on Thursday, Dec. 4. as they travel to Northwest Missouri to play the Bearcats. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
