The Lady Hornets pulled off a 65-63 win against 15th-ranked Pittsburg State, despite being unable to break a 5-point lead.  A buzzer-beater by freshman forward Vanessa Coleman helped secure the win for ESU. 

Both teams had a slow start with low percentages from beyond the arc. The Gorillas held a 17-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

ESU and PSU alternated leads during the start of the second quarter, until the Hornets took the largest lead of the first half 26-22.

The lead switched back over to the Gorillas, but the Hornets then got it back 33-32 with only two minutes left in the half. PSU was able to score the final four points to make it 36-33 at the break.

The Gorillas started the second half with the first two points, but never led by more than five in the third. ESU scored the final four points on a couple of contested layups by graduate student guard Kaitlyn Sanders to tie the game going into the fourth 47-47.

The game was tied 54-54 again at the 6:22 mark in the fourth. The Hornets earned a few opportunities to take the lead but failed to complete them as PSU went on a 4-0 run with 4:02 left.

The next points were scored by sophomore guard Lexsey DeWitt and Sanders to help the Hornets advance 60-58. 

Ten seconds remained in the competition when the Gorillas were fouled and made the first of two free throws to bring the score within one point, 62-61. ESU did not get the rebound on the second free throw and allowed PSU another possession. 

With 2.4 seconds left of play, the Gorillas went on to take a one-point lead against the Hornets.

As the clock winding down, Sanders dished to Coleman behind the arc, and Coleman buried the buzzer beater to lift her team to a 65–63 win over the 15th-ranked Gorillas.

The Lady Hornets will play next at Fort Hays State University with tipoff at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 12.
