The Emporia State Women’s Tennis secured a 6-1 win at home against McPherson on Saturday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.
ESU had an early spark in the doubles after dropping eight games in three matches. Senior Sheriden Wichman and freshman Erin Cahill won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Winning 6-4 at No. 1 to earn the point was junior Giovanna Ferreira and freshman Carla Paul Piquer. Closing out, freshman doubles partners Ana Fatjo Coll and Giulia Russu won 6-1 at No. 3.
With the start of singles play, the Hornets made it 1-1, despite being down a player. Piquer won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 to advance ESU 2-1. At No. 3 Cahill took a 6-3, 6-1 win and Wichman rallied after dropping the first set to secure a 2–6, 7–6, 1–0 (10–4) victory. She sealed the dual match win.
Russu and Coll each earned 8–2 victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively to finish out the dual.
The Hornet women battled against Rockhurst University on Sunday in Lawrence.
The Hawks took an early lead after dominating doubles play, completing a clean sweep of the competition and gaining a 1-0 lead. They advanced 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win at 3 singles after.
Winning her first two sets 7-3 in a tiebreaker, sophomore Yuliya Klimova dropped the next two sets as Rockhurst took a 3-0 advantage. The win was secured by the Hawks with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles late into the night. The remaining matches were called off.
ESU tennis will travel to Bolivar, Missouri on Feb. 20 to compete against Southwest Baptist. First serve for the Hornet men and women is set for 10 a.m. at the John A. Bryant Tennis Center.
