On Friday, Oct. 27, the Emporia State community, sororities, and fraternities gathered around the homecoming bonfire for a night of entertainment. After the band, cheer, and dance team performed, there was only one thing left to do: Yell Like Hell.
“Yell Like Hell” is simply a yelling or shouting match at Wilson Park between ESU fraternities and sororities, as well as other student organizations, such as the ESU Marching Hornets. Usually, each team will come up with their own chant and yell it as loud as they can to hopefully win the competition. A group of judges decide the winners. This event helps to gain student spirit and excitement for the upcoming Football game the following Saturday and meet Homecoming Royalty.
This year, the winners of Yell Like Hell were Sigma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Alpha, and Kappa Delta Chi. Sigma Sigma Sigma now holds the title of Yell Like Hells Champs for the second year in a row.
Abby Starkey, a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, said the purpose of this event is to “garner school spirit with friendly competition…as to get us excited for the upcoming game.”
“I think it’s a lot of fun,” said Abby Starkey, a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha. “I personally love the idea of friendly competition and I feel like if it’s done the right way, it can promote unity amongst all the organizations on campus, and I’m just happy for whoever wins.”
The event also allows ESU football players to promote their homecoming game.
“I think it’s great for the sports teams to be able to get out here and talk about their upcoming game…I think they should participate in Yell Like Hell,” Starkey said.
