One could say it has almost become pointless to report or discuss about the many controversies of this presidency.
Every time a new controversy arises, a new seemingly more shocking event takes its place before we can even fully comprehend the last one. The media is like a dog in a room full of squirrels, it can only pursue one story so long before another controversy shakes its bushy tail and strings the media along until another one shortly appears after.
But not all of these events should be given equal attention.
For example, the Obama wiretapping farce came around just in time for the focus to come off of Sessions so the media could dance around the ridiculous accusations. Now, it can be debated whether or not this was purposeful. Did Lord Cheese Nip once again see something by a dubious news source he agrees with and decide to blast whatever came to his mind about it onto twitter regardless of the consequences? Or did he make the baseless accusation to deflect attention? Maybe it could be a combination of the two, perhaps someone directed him to this false information knowing what the consequences would be.
Regardless of how these controversies come about we need to reinforce our minds to not be so easily shifted from one event to the next.
The fact is, the stipulation that certain aspects of the Russian government interfered with our elections and perhaps compromised government officials is one with enough evidence to be examined and taken seriously. The suggestion that Obama wiretapped, however, is far less serious and more-or-less came out of nowhere with no mounting evidence or precedent. But because of the voracious nature of our news media, both stories were given equal coverage, with the wiretapping controversy eventually overpowering the Sessions one.
Whatever your political stance is here at ESU, do not be so easily distracted by unimportant events attempting to overshadow ones of actual importance. As an academic community we must parse through events to see the truth. Don’t be easily distracted, and be vigilant.
